Notes on SUP lessons & rentals :
SUP lessons should be reserved in advance at least 48hrs so we can secure a private instructor just for you and to guarantee we have boards for you. Rentals do not require advance reservations, but it is suggested. Lessons include comprehensive instruction on all aspects of stand-up paddleboarding, including reading the marine conditions, launching your board, balance, positioning, paddle sizing and stroke techniques, navigational safety and requirements, turning, stopping, reversing, and treading water. Our goal is to get you up and paddling, after establishing a foundation of SUP basics, but foremost in our efforts are ensuring your safety and having fun.
You can take the cruise provided transportation to the beach when beach conditions are favorable for stand up paddleboarding but you’ll have to go where they go, and that is Alan Shephard Park, along with everyone on your ship! If you want to go to someplace else, say the Cocoa Beach Pier, or a quiet stretch of beach, then you’ll need to take a taxi. On the day of your outing, we can determine this at the time you are disembarking the ship. Please get in contact with us by phone to determine. Much of the time, however, we prefer to conduct lessons and/or rentals on the bayside when the surf is up for calm water conditions that are more favorable to learning and practicing. Our most often used bayside location is Banana River Park and this is about a 15 minute walk from cruise terminal #1. We’ll help you plan your transportation when you call to make a reservation.
Our Banana River Park location off of Puerto Del Rio Drive behind the Radisson resort is about a 2 to 3 minute drive from cruise terminal #1. This should not cost more than $4/pp. Should we be paddling somewhere else, ask for the “Rate 1” or better pricing. Most beach locations are an equal distance or shorter than most “Rate 1” locations and as such, should cost less, not more. In 2015, this is $6/person, and $20 for a family is not unreasonable. Some locations may be beyond the “Rate 1” zone, such as Lori Wilson Park. You’ll pay more, but should be able to negotiate a reasonable fare. Good luck!
On the bayside we frequently encounter manatees and dolphins, and this makes paddleboarding extra special. From the bayside you can continue on your day without returning directly to the ship. Go the the beach, pier, shopping, etc. Many guests will rent bikes and pick them up right from the park. Otherwise a taxi will gladly pick you up at the park and take you anywhere you wish to go.
Note on gratuity:
SUP instructors are independent contractors and rely on tips as a significant component of their overall income and your gratuity for their superior service is suggested, although not required. A typical gratuity for instructors is similar to restaurant tips, 10-20% based on your satisfaction. When renting boards where we deliver and pick up, a delivery and handling gratuity to the assistant of $3-5 per board is also greatly appreciated. Thank you
